About Us

Kirti Ravjee, formally known as Kirti.N.Mistry, has had a passion for dance as long as she can remember. Her parents say she could dance before she could walk, and it’s all thanks to them that the training that followed lead Kirti to be the Performer, Teacher and Choreographer she is today.

Her training began at the age of 5 when she attended the Sangeeta Nataka Academy, now known as the Institute of Indian Arts and Culture, under the discipline of Smt. Satyabhama. After completing her Bharata Natyam Arangetram in 1999, she pursued the North Indian Classical Dance style Khatak under Vinod Hasal at the Radha Krishna Dance Academy, whilst still doing a post graduate course in Bharata Natyam. It was then that she began teaching.

Being the kind of person who always wants to improve and is keen to learn more, she travelled to India, Kolkata where she trained in the Lucknow Gharana of Kathak at the Padatik Dance Centre under Madhumita Roy and Nayanika Ghosh. Upon her return she started a Kathak school called Kalamandir – Temple of Art.

Kirti then travelled to the UK in pursuit of a career in her degree  Bachelor of Science degree in computer science, whilst doing dance part time.

However, what she discovered there was that she wanted Dance as her full time career and with the support of her loving husband, Menil Ravjee, this is exactly what she set out to do. In London she became a disciple of Sujata Banerjee as a benefit of being a part of the academy.

While in London Kirti also joined the Bollywood Grooves Troupe and underwent with intense training to be a part of this troupe. As a Bollywood dancer Kirti has been performing and choreographing since a very young age, learning from movies and taking lots of influence from Classical training in her choreography.

Kirti has performed many events. The highlights of her performances are Diwali Festival at Trafalgar Square in London, The Kala Academy in Goa after a workshop with Pandit Birju Maharaj, the Chidambaram Temple in Chennai, Uma Sharma’s Krishna Janmasthami Festival in Delhi, the Mini Hall in Chennai, Food and Wine Festival in Cape Town, Newtown Diwali Festival.

Kirti’s main aim is to promote the three beautiful dance forms in South Africa which began with founding the Ghungroo Dance Academy. She hopes to share her knowledge with those that are as passionate about dance as she is.
